Frequently asked questions

How often do I need to water my kokedama?

The amount of water your kokedama will need will need will depend on a few conditions. These include what type of plant you have and the amount of water they like, where your kokedama is situated and the time of year. The great advantage about a kokedama is that you can hold the ball in your hands and see if it feels light. The twine will also become loose and the moss dried out. These are all indications of your kokedama needing to be watered. All kokedamas come with care instructions specific to the plant type.

How do I water my kokedama?

Take a bowl, sink or anything that will hold water. Fill to a level half way the height of the ball. This level will prevent the ball from tipping over and damaging your plant. Rest the ball in the water and allow the water to absorb for 10 minutes. Alternate watering technique with pouring water down the centre of the plant instead of submerging ball. This will help prolong the deterioration of the twine.

Some of the indoor plant varieties require a liquid fertiliser. This is best applied directly into the plants root system during the growing season.

Will my plant outgrow the kokedama?

Yes. Your plant will grow and the root system will need more space. The twine that is wrapped around your kokedama is a natural fibre that is biodegradable. After approximately 1 year the twine will have broken down and your kokedama will need some fresh soil mixture, fresh moss and new twine. We offer the "Retwine" service.
